An Artist and Biochemist Explore the Beauty of Water and Danger of Pollutants

2pm CDT / Speakers: Arica Hilton, Janet Angel Welch, and Gail Sturm (Moderator)

Brushwood Center welcomes two internationally acclaimed advocates for the oceans, artist Arica Hilton and biochemist Dr. Janet Angel Welch, to the 37th Annual Smith Nature Symposium.

Their conversation will dive into threats facing the world’s oceans and water sources. This program also features a special musical performance, "Reflections on Earth - Oceans," created by Sibylle Szaggars Redford, The Way of the Rain Artistic Director, with music by Tim Janis, and spoken word by Robert Redford.

From ubiquitous plastic pollution to devastating oil spills, Hilton and Dr. Welch will tell their underwater stories, share thoughts on the current state of aquatic environments, and illuminate solutions to today’s marine challenges. Though these advocates take very different approaches to preserving the world of water, they share the same ambition for restoring it and work to inspire people to be better stewards of this precious resource. Register here.

Read about Hilton and Welch in this article in The Daily Herald.

Anti-Racism Resources for Environmentalists:

Brushwood Center holds Jacob Blake, his family, and the Kenosha community in our hearts in light of the devastating demonstration of police brutality and ensuing violence against protesters this week. As the call for change echoes throughout our communities and across the nation, we acknowledge the significant need for anti-racist action in the environmental sector. We will continue to feature anti-racism resources in this newsletter and encourage our readers to organizae and take action against injustices in our own communities, networks, and institutions. #BlackLivesMatter
